Predicting collapses
Researchers are finding tell-tale signs of a pending tipping point that may apply to systems as widely varied as climate change, local habitats, and brain seizures. One such sign is that the system begins to take longer and longer to recover from minor perturbations. Another is increasing variance – how much a set of measurements of a particular variable deviates from its average.
