2012: My Year in Words and Pictures
This year I stepped back from the maelstrom of activities I was engaged in during 2011, and shifted my focus to a few new things. One of those new things is a blog – the one you’re looking at right now. It’s not devoted to any one subject; rather, it’s about anything that interests me. Which is to say, almost everything.
But my major new focus is the company I joined this year, Celebrations of Life. I’m responsible for design and implementation of our web presence and social media strategy.
Last year I began my annual letter with this picture of Duncan the coonhound, taken in Powderhorn Park on a November afternoon.
In April, we unexpectedly lost Duncan to cancer.
Cyndie painted this portrait with watercolors:
Duncan was a Good Dog. We miss him.
Cyndie is now helping people to memorialize their pets by writing stories about their lives.
.
Cyndie and I and a few friends have been entertaining ourselves with visual journaling.
The rules of visual journaling are simple:
1. Open a book to a page that hasn’t been changed.
2. Change it.
3. Pass the book on.
For my birthday, Cyndie arranged a surprise trip to The House on the Rock in southern Wisconsin, which I’d been curious about for some time. It is a wondrous, surreal, and genuinely spooky place.
My son Ben is studying graphic design, making his own art, and creating beats for local hiphop artists. My stepdaughter Emery is growing her fashion design business, GutsGlamGlory, designing and selling clothing, jewelry, and accessories. A lot of spikes are involved.
This has been my 57th trip around the sun.
More and more I find myself pondering
the profound mystery of being alive and awake
in an astonishing universe.
I wish everyone everywhere more peace, more joy, and more compassion.
Easy. Lots of feelings in minimal images and words. Happy New Year David. Joe
Thanks David. Wishing you and yours also more….

Thanks for the innovative seasons greetings. You and Cyndie both are such beautiful artists, and what creative minds…glad I got a glimpse. May wonderful things abound in the new year.
Awesome, David. And, yes, House on the Rock is truly a unique experience (and I use “unique” very sparingly). It was Claire and my last trip (along with Taliesin) before we went our almost separate ways, but the two had nothing to do with each other, so don’t worry. :) We had a wonderful weekend that we still recall fondly.
I hope you, David, Cyndie, Ben and Emery have a blessed new year!
Ralph
Happy New Year!
Happy Old Year, and Happy New Year too!
Thanks, David, for sharing yourself in a myriad of ways! I have not tuned into blogs to this point, but I am now interested, at least in yours!
May the new year bring what you most desire: Make it so!
I really enjoyed getting this creative year in review. Best wishes for a happy, healthy 2013.
There is no cooler way to shake it up than a few hours at House on the Rock. Glad you finally made it there. Life is bizarre; why not celebrate?
Happy New Year David and family.

Thanks David! It’s a pleasure to know you and hear, ever so little, about your life in our awesome world.
Dear David:
I enjoyed looking at your blog. I went to the House on the Rock when I was about 10 and still remember it in all its’ weirdness! May you and your family be blessed in 2013!
Susie
I love how our paths have now crossed in a different way through the Association of Personal Historians, Barry Baines, and Celebrations of Life. Why am I not surprised to find that you are also interested in this kind of story-telling?
David, your wide awake, open, and appreciative approach to life are inspiring. Good visuals too, especially that watercolor by Cyndie.
I wish you a very good and fulfilling year.
